My review is only a little slanted by the fact that I grew up in the Western Cape! I have personal knowledge about the terroir and the grapes that are produced there, so I can wholeheartedly recommend this refreshing and approachable Shiraz. While it is called “sweet”, that is just to allude to the ripe flavors of mixed berries and chocolate undertones.

It is not sickly sweet and does not resemble jam in texture at all. The Jam Jar Sweet Shiraz calories are actually very low! This Shiraz has the essential elements of fun, fruit, and fellowship bottled with the wine, and is a good representation of the warmth and culture of this beautiful land.

It is a perfectly balanced Shiraz with enough acidity to cut through the sweetness and leave you with a satisfied palate. It is not an overly sweet Shiraz according to these reviews.

Appearance

Many wine lovers are first attracted to the stylish label and excellent price. That is until they open the bottle of Jam Jar Sweet Shiraz and see the burgundy velvet wine flowing into the glass. It is luminous and allows sparks of ruby to catch your eye. And then the aromas rise, and you want to lift the glass to taste the sweet richness.

Aroma

The nose is full of fragrance. Upfront you will notice rich cherry, strawberry, and cassis. Then, the herby elements emerge and hints of fennel, pepper, and spice become evident. I am sure you will agree that this is an alluring invitation to your taste buds and one that they will not be able to resist.

Taste

Jam Jar Sweet Shiraz can only be described as sensual as it embraces your tongue. The texture is thick and sweet, with jamminess that is created by the berry tones. The clever winemaker’s skills have ensured that there is a pleasant acidity to balance the richness. This honey-like texture has a vague spiciness and all the flavors have the luxurious wave of dark chocolate weaving through. This is a superb example of a Shiraz – with a medium body and a perfect balance of spicy and sweet.

Finish

The lengthy finish is sweet and fulfilling. It is not excessively tannic so it will not dry your mouth out. Instead, each sip leaves a pleasant dark chocolate coating at the back of your throat which is a very pleasant sensation. This makes Jam Jar Sweet Shiraz perfect when paired with food.

Rating

This is, without a doubt, a very special Shiraz! I absolutely love its sweet perfection. It is an honest red wine and delivers what it says on the label, and then a little bit more. There is a simplicity, but also layers of all the flavors and texture that you would want from a hearty Shiraz. I rate the Jam Jar Sweet Shiraz one of my favorite reds and would not want to find myself without a bottle on a cold winter’s evening.
