Tasting Notes

I would have to admit to buying Girl and Dragon Malbec initially because of the distinctive label that caught my eye. It also has an enchanting name. Knowing that a Malbec would be full of bold flavor and quite smooth on the palate, I knew that I could not go wrong. It proved to be a fairly decent bottle of wine with average popularity for an Argentinian Malbec from Mendoza. This review will have to end with the words, “Get the girls round and ask them what they think!”

Appearance

Girl & Dragon Malbec has the expected fiery, dark red hues and texture that is typical of wines produced from Argentinian Malbec grapes. You will be entranced by its magical flow as you pour from the bottle into the glass. I have to say that most people will be too busy admiring the artwork on the bottle to admire the beautiful color of this wine.

Aroma

It has a dark cherry nose that is sustained from start to finish. You will also pick up some smoky tobacco and oak aromas. Don’t be surprised to catch whiffs of mushrooms in earthy autumnal enriched soil. There will also be hints of bonfire and tobacco.

Taste

There is a cheeky oakiness at first, which is joined by the soft, ripe red and blackberries. Remember that this is not a top-range Malbec, so the fruit notes only feature soft plum and earthy notes, rather than the big bold hit that you might expect from other Malbecs.

Finish

Girl & Dragon is smooth on the palate and fades out with a soft finish. It is perfect for those who are learning to appreciate red wines and still using training wheels. It will not overwhelm the palate. It is quite dry with light acidity in the background.

Rating

If you are looking for an everyday red wine to slosh into a glass as you do your meal preparation, then this is perfect. The Girl & Dragon Malbec price is surprisingly affordable. You do not get anything fancy, but you will not be disappointed with this rousing red wine. Plus, it will look good on the table with its gothic label. It could even be called quite “hip” and will certainly make an impression at a Gothic-style party! As with all Malbec wines, Girl & Dragon Malbec alcohol content is considered high and should be drunk responsibly.

Girl & Dragon Malbec Food Pairing

Enjoy this wine with any red meat (beef, lamb, or duck), whether it be grilled or prepared as a hearty stew. Marinated steaks will sing when paired with the tart, cherry notes of Girl and Dragon Malbec. The flavors of a rich paella will not be threatened by this red wine, and nor will a pasta or risotto made with truffles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who Makes Girl & Dragon Malbec?

This Argentinian Malbec is made by the Girl & Dragon winery situated in Mendoza. Girl & Dragon Winery comes under the umbrella of a Californian-based company.

How Is Girl & Dragon Malbec Made?

There are so many winemaking techniques that go into making Malbec unique. From the first day of harvest, winemakers invest time and energy and that forms the foundation of the winemaking process.

The harvest is usually manual and starts before the sun gets too hot. The picked grapes are placed in small cases which makes it easier to record the integrity of each bunch. The fruit is taken to the winery where it is placed on a selection belt. After being kept at a low temperature, the grapes are transported to casks where the fermentation process will begin. After about two weeks, the newborn wine is separated from the seeds and skin and placed in oak barrels which are the perfect “nursery” for Malbec grapes. Sulfites are an important ingredient which adds to the richness and tangy flavor of Girl & Dragon Malbec.

Where Is Girl & Dragon Malbec Made?

Mendoza is the largest and most famous wine region in Argentina. It is located on the edge of the Andes, and its high altitude is perfect for producing outstanding red wines that are full of concentrated flavor and passion. Being high above sea level, the temperature is perfectly moderated. The long, warm sunny days are followed by nights that are cooled by the westerly winds blowing off the Andes. This coolness ensures slow ripening and a drawn-out growing season. The Malbec grapes adore all these features, becoming fat and black without becoming acidic.

The capital of the wine-making region is Mendoza City which is steadily becoming a Mecca for wine tourists. It now rates amongst the nine top global wine capitals! There is a national harvest festival held in March that celebrates the gathering of grapes. It is also the perfect time for taking a wine tour to the many wineries that have concentrated in the area.

How to Serve Girl & Dragon Malbec?

Serve Girl and Dragon Malbec in red wine glasses that will display its beautiful ruby richness. It should be served at room temperature. Remember to keep the bottle close by to allow the label to add a sense of “specialness” that might not be evident on the first sip.

$8 – $15 per bottle.

How Long Does Girl & Dragon Malbec Last?

Stored in a cool, dark place, this wine will last up to three years, but it is best consumed soon after opening.
